How often should a fire alarm system be tested?

Weekly tests should be carried out by the responsible person on site, with a full periodic inspection and service by a qualified engineer at least every six months, in line with BS 5839.

Is fire alarm testing a legal requirement?

Yes. Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, the responsible person must ensure fire detection and alarm systems are maintained in efficient working order.

What happens during a periodic service visit?
